"We'll let the photos do the talking here, but when you sit in the new C, whether up front or in back, you're sitting in the nicest cabin in this class. The still-pretty A4 has nothing on this; the 3 Series's best materials can't compare to the worst in this car. Wow."

Ill believe it when I see it. R+T sure sounds like it is drinking that delicious kool aid though.

It's been said before, but... UGH.

"Hell, even BMW can't do what it used to."
Sad, but true.

I can overlook that though, probably because most of the time I've spent in my previous car I had a Garmin GPS attached to my windshield.

So this is basically the IS if it wasn't hidous. Nice. Still would get an ATS because sport sedans deserve manuals (and I'm not one to to really jump on manual bandwagon much).

Strangely I don't like the looks of the ATS, and you can't get a base model with a manual transmission (2.5L is autobox only).

Here I was thinking the C400 4Matic could be a great option for me in a couple years when my 135is lease runs out, because I could then sell my Grand Cherokee and consolidate down to 1 car. Until I got to this paragraph:
Unfortunately, the seven-speed automatic proved clumsy, slow, and clunky. And if I'm being honest, the twin-turbo V6 makes the perfect argument for its rumored straight-six replacement. Not only is it too loud and coarse, but the whiny V6 engine note doesn't match the elegance of the rest of the car.
Oh well, not like I need to worry about it in the immediate future anyway.

The 2.5 is shit, the real engine is the 2.0T.

Nobody who really enjoys driving is going to want to bother with the 2.5 though. Sure, on paper it makes halfway decent numbers. But I just had a Malibu rental car with the same motor. In economy-minded family sedan duty, the 2.5 is fine. In fact I was wayyyy more satisfied with that Malibu than the last rental I had (an Altima with its infernal throttle and CVT calibration) but exciting is one thing the 2.5 most definitely is not.

They said the base engine was a better option to fit the car. Also I can't fucking WAIT until MB has a straight-6 again to compete with BMW!!!

Yeah, I saw that part. But the base engine is also down 80 hp from my 135is. So as a replacement, ehhh, that doesn't exactly set my heart on fire.

Yeah, but I can get a 320i with a manual for less than the ATS 2.5L with an automatic.

Nobody who enjoys driving is going to buy an ATS - there are better options for less out there. The ATS was built for people who want the badge but don't want to pay CTS prices, like the BMW 320i and Mercedes CLA. They will move a significant amount of the 2.5L models.

The C-Class was never a sporty car - hell they had to give it an AMG V8 to make it fun!

Well, I'm just talking in the context of what I would do in a couple years when my 135is lease runs out. Because I have an old Grand Cherokee to go with the 135is, for the purposes of:
- Driving in the snow
- Fitting inside the car while wearing my bigass winter coat
- Carrying more than 1 passenger
- Carrying more cargo than will fit in the 135is, like when I go on a road trip with my gf that will last more than 2 days, she can't stop herself from bringing more crap, and it's not going to do me any good to tell her otherwise
So, the C400 looked like it could theoretically combine most of the performance of my 135is, with most of the reasons I have my Grand Cherokee, which would mean that I could go back to having 1 vehicle.
But the comment about the engine and transmission in the C400 made me think otherwise.
I suppose there's always the GLA45 AMG...

Ok, I was responding to your comment knocking the ATS for not offering the 2.5 with a manual transmission. So, rather than get into whether or not the ATS is a car for people who enjoy driving, and whether it's better than cars like the 320i or CLA, I'll keep this simple. Change my original "nobody who really enjoys driving is going to want to bother with the 2.5," to "nobody who really wants a manual ATS is going to want to bother with the 2.5," and let's move on shall we?

? If my previous comment came off as rude or otherwise I apologize - that was not my intent. I just can't see the ATS competing with the 3-Series when the basest-of-the-base models don't get a manual. Granted you are completely correct in that anyone who wants a manual ATS is going to get the 2.0L.

Ah. I thought you were just looking to trade in for a newer sporty vehicle. I had no idea the GLA45 AMG was coming to the US! That would fit the bill nicely, provided the $50k isn't too high.

You didn't come off as rude. I felt we were getting caught up on the "nobody who enjoys driving..." part and was trying to refocus back to the 2.5 lacking a manual was all.

Ah. Righty-o then. Come to think of it, BMW is the only one (of Mercedes, Audi and Cadillac) that offers a manual transmission on their base-model entry-level car. I wonder if that will go away in the near future.

Yup, here's the GLA45 just chilling on mbusa.com .
$50k isn't necessarily too high, but my overall work/relationship/life-in-general situation could be vastly different in a couple years. So we'll see.
What I'm most likely to do is just turn in the 135is when the lease is done, use the Grand Cherokee as my only car, and enjoy not having a car payment until something catches my fancy.
